Essen, Germany – May 3, 2025
In commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, the international organization Journalistes Without Borders (JWB) hosted a major press conference in the city of Essen, Germany. The event brought together a diverse gathering of journalists, academics, and intellectuals from across the globe to highlight the essential role of free and independent media in democratic societies.
The conference served as a powerful platform for dialogue and reflection on the challenges facing press freedom worldwide. Participants discussed the rise of censorship, the safety of journalists in conflict zones, and the growing influence of disinformation in the digital age.
One of the keynote speakers, Dr. Ali Farhad, delivered a compelling address emphasizing the fundamental importance of press freedom. “Freedom of the press is not a privilege,” Dr. Farhad stated. “It is a universal right and a cornerstone of every open and just society. Without it, transparency, accountability, and informed public debate cannot thrive.”
The event also included panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities for media professionals and advocates of free speech.
This gathering in Essen reaffirmed the global commitment to defending journalists and promoting media independence — a mission that is more vital than ever in today’s rapidly changing media landscape.
